Visualize the Plays

In addition to the glosses, production notes are included on the left-hand pages of the text. These production notes refer to how different productions interpret an aspect of that particular scene, providing the student with insights not offered by definitions alone. It also creates images for the student to visualize the scene or put the scene in a particular context.

Set design illustrations and costume rendering provide a window into past productions, while historical illustrations put the play in the context of a different time period.

The illustrations and production photos included in the text provide students with various visual interpretations of a scene. The photos correlate with the text on the right hand side of the page, allowing the students to see a visual interpretation of the very lines they are reading.

Tips and Reviews:

I always include performance history in my discussions, so I love the great photographs in the books. They really help when I am trying to explain how a particular actor, director or designer interpreted a scene.
—Deborah Montouri, Shippensburg University

I like the way that photographs from actual productions are interwoven with the text; even a still photograph can say a lot about a production.
—Ann Basso, University of South Florida
